July 2007 Question

Can estate planning address what will happen to my pets should I die or become disabled?

Answer: Yes, a Power of Attorney document can be drafted to include a paragraph allowing the "agent" you nominate to take care of your pets if you lose the capacity to do so.  Similarly, custody and care of your pets upon your death can be addressed in a will by naming guardians for them much like you would for minor children.
